2000 – Geoffrey Ballard

Geoffrey Ballard was a Canadian geophysicist and entrepreneur. With a doctorate in earth and planetary sciences from Washington University in St. Louis, and a belief in the transformation from petroleum to hydrogen-based fuels, he worked progressively in business with several companies and projects to promote this transformation.

The Jury's motivation

Dr. Geoffrey Ballard is awarded this price because of his meaningful and creative contribution to the development of the fuel cell and its usage.

The fuel cell can very well lead to a change of system through a more effective use of natural resources and less impact on the environment on both globally and locally. The fuel cell can play a big part in the prevention of climate change. The Jury sees Dr. Ballard's work as an important big step towards a sustainable development.
